About Pepsu Road Transport Corporation

Company, commonly known as PRTC, is a Punjab-based public sector road transport undertaking established on October 16, 1956. It is jointly owned by the State Government of Punjab and the Central Government through Northern Railway, and is administered by a body corporate headed by a Chairman appointed by the State Government. The corporation operates from its head office on Nabha Road in Patiala and currently runs a fleet of 1,232 buses across nine depots and 16 bus stands spread throughout Punjab, serving passengers across multiple states including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

The corporation commenced operations in 1956 with a modest fleet of just 60 buses, 15 routes, 11,107 kilometers of daily coverage, and 345 employees on its roll. Over the following seven decades, PRTC expanded steadily through fleet additions, route extensions, and the development of depot and bus stand infrastructure across the state. Today the corporation employs 4,555 staff across operational, workshop, and ministerial categories, including drivers, conductors, inspectors, and administrative personnel engaged on regular, outsourced, and contract bases. Additionally, PRTC supports approximately 4,913 pensioners and family pensioners, disbursing pension payments of approximately Rs. 10.47 crore per month to its retired workforce.

PRTC’s current fleet of 1,232 buses operates across multiple vehicle categories including ordinary buses, MIDI buses, Volvo and Scania integral coaches, and HVAC-equipped buses. The corporation owns 983 buses directly, with an additional 249 vehicles hired under the KM Scheme to supplement capacity on active routes. Its nine depots are located at Patiala, Sangrur, Chandigarh, Bathinda, Budhlada, Faridkot, Kapurthala, Barnala, and Ludhiana, with 16 bus stands operating under their respective depot jurisdictions covering key destinations including Bassi Pathana, Patran, Amloh, Sirhind, Moonak, Ahmedgarh, Zirakpur, Talwandi Sabo, Rama Mandi, Phagwara, and others across Punjab. The corporation is headed by a Managing Director who functions as the executive head under Section 15(1) of the governing Act, with the Chief Accounts Officer-cum-Financial Advisor managing financial oversight under State Government appointment.
