After reorganizing the previous electrical board to manage power distribution, they were formed under the Companies Act on May 31, 2005, and are now a fully owned corporate body under the Maharashtra government. Developing, running, and maintaining the distribution system is their main goal to guarantee that customers in their assigned area will always have access to power.

Currently, they provide electricity across Maharashtra, including parts of Mumbai, and are among the largest power distribution entities in the country and Asia. With a workforce of over 70,000 employees, they serve more than 2.70 crore consumers. Their vast infrastructure includes over 4,000 substations, 25,000 high-voltage feeders, around 8 lakh distribution transformers, and extensive transmission lines covering a large geographical area, reaching thousands of villages and towns. They operate through multiple offices, including regional, zonal, divisional, and sub-divisional offices, to manage operations efficiently.

With a generation tie-up capacity of 33,755 MW, including 8,027 MW from renewable sources, they have maintained a surplus power supply since 2012 and successfully met peak demands. Their Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses have significantly decreased over the years, staying below the national average. Efforts to improve rural power supply include agricultural feeder separation, ensuring a stable electricity supply for farmers. Under solar initiatives, multiple feeders have been solarized, benefiting thousands of agricultural consumers.
